How to Prevent Neck Pain: Causes, Symptoms, and Strategies to Avoid Discomfort
While the human neck is not as long or flexible as that of a giraffe, it is still an amazing feat of engineering. The average neck is only about 12 inches long but contains over 25 bones, 20 muscles, and various other blood vessels and nerves. Sadly, it is also one of the most commonly injured body parts.
According to the American Chiropractic Association, half of Americans will experience neck pain
at some point in their lives. And while it’s often nothing more than a nuisance, neck pain can lead to more severe problems if it’s not treated properly.
For many of us, neck pain is simply a fact of life. We spend hours hunched over our computers at work, we sleep in positions that put a strain on our necks, and we often sustain minor injuries that lead to discomfort. But while neck pain is common, it’s not something we have to simply accept.
We know that neck pain can be a real pain in the neck, (ha!). But don’t despair, we reached out to Dr. Lindell from Lindell Chiropractic in Corpus, Christi, TX for his advice on how to avoid neck pain. Dr. Lindell has been providing neck pain relief in Corpus Christi for more than 20 years so he is quite an expert on the topic.
Neck pain can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). It can be caused by a single event, such as a car accident, or it can be the result of repetitive stress, such as poor posture.
Acute neck pain often goes away on its own with home treatment such as over-the-counter pain medication and ice. However, if the pain is severe or persists for more than a week, you should see a doctor.
Chronic neck pain, on the other hand, can last for several weeks or even months. If you’re experiencing chronic neck pain, it’s important to seek treatment so that you can find relief and avoid further damage.
Neck Pain: Causes
Before we get into how to prevent neck pain, let’s take a look at some of the common causes which lead to neck pain. As we mentioned, poor posture is often the culprit. “One of the most common things I see in my office is what we call ‘tech neck,” says Dr. Lindell.
“When you’re looking down at your phone or your computer, you’re putting a lot of strain on the muscles and ligaments in your neck. This can lead to pain and discomfort, as well as headaches.”
Other common causes of neck pain include:
- Muscle strain
- Ligament sprains
- Arthritis
- Disc herniation
- Cervical spondylosis (degenerative disc disease)
Apart from these causes, an automobile accident, a sports injury, or even a bad night’s sleep can lead to neck pain.
Neck Pain: Signs and Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of neck pain can vary depending on the cause. But some common signs and symptoms include:
- Stiffness in the neck muscles makes it difficult to turn your head.
- Tenderness in the muscles leads to constant aches and pains.
- Radiating pain (pain that radiates from the neck to the shoulders or arms)
- Headaches
- Reduced range of motion
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor or chiropractor to get a proper diagnosis. Once the cause of your neck pain is determined, you can begin treatment.
How to Prevent Neck Pain
Now that we’ve looked at some of the common causes and symptoms of neck pain, let’s talk about how to prevent it.
Posture
One of the best ways to avoid neck pain is to practice good posture. “When you’re sitting at your desk, make sure your computer screen is at eye level,” says Dr. Lindell. “And when you’re looking down at your phone, hold it up in front of you instead of looking down at it.”
You should also avoid sitting in the same position for too long. Get up and move around every 20 minutes or so to keep your muscles from getting stiff. And when you’re sleeping, sleep on your back or on your side with a pillow under your head to support your neck.
Exercise
Staying active is another great way to prevent neck pain. Exercise helps to strengthen the muscles in your neck and can help improve your posture.
Doing some type of neck exercise daily, even as simple as nodding your head up and down or side to side can help prevent pain. Other good exercises for preventing neck pain include shoulder shrugs and head turns.
Carry Weight with Caution
If you have to carry heavy bags or boxes, be sure to do it with caution. Try to distribute the weight evenly and don’t twist your body while carrying. It’s also a good idea to use a backpack instead of a shoulder bag so that the weight is evenly distributed.
Use Ergonomic Equipment
Ergonomic equipment is designed to help reduce strain on your body. If you work at a computer all day, make sure your chair is at the proper height and that your keyboard and mouse are within easy reach.
You may also want to consider using a standing desk or an adjustable desk to give yourself the option to stand or sit throughout the day. And if you have to do a lot of heavy lifting at work, be sure to use proper lifting techniques to avoid injuring your neck.
Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain
One of the most effective treatments for neck pain is chiropractic care. Chiropractors are trained to identify and treat problems with the musculoskeletal system, which includes the bones, joints, and muscles.
Chiropractic treatment for neck pain often includes manual adjustments to the spine. These adjustments can help to realign the spine and relieve pressure on the nerves. Chiropractors may also use other techniques such as massage and physical therapy to treat neck pain.
